Wael Shawky is an Egyptian artist known for films, performances and installations that reexamine historical narratives, often retelling events like the Crusades from non-Western perspectives. His celebrated "Cabaret Crusades" trilogy uses intricate marionettes to stage medieval history, questioning how stories of conflict are told and by whom.
