Heman Bekele is a young Ethiopian-American inventor who developed a low-cost bar of soap designed to deliver skin cancer treating compounds, an idea rooted in memories of laborers working long hours under the sun in Ethiopia without protection. He built the prototype as a middle schooler, won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge in 2023, and was named TIME's Kid of the Year in 2024.
