Founded in 1998 by legendary photographer Sebastião Salgado and his wife Lélia Wanick Salgado on the family farm in Aimorés, Minas Gerais. When they inherited the land, it was a degraded cattle ranch, deforested, dry, lifeless. Over 25 years, Instituto Terra planted 6.5 million native Atlantic Forest seedlings across 1,500 hectares. The springs returned. The animals came back: pumas, giant anteaters, maned wolves, 170+ bird species, 33 reptile species. UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status granted. Th
