David Holmgren co-originated the permaculture concept with Bill Mollison in the 1970s, first set out in their 1978 book Permaculture One, written from Holmgren's student work in Tasmania. Since then he has spent decades refining the design system through practice rather than theory, developing Melliodora, a smallholding at Hepburn Springs in central Victoria that he and Su Dennett have run as a working demonstration of food production, water harvesting and low-energy living.
