Born in 1938, novelist and playwright Simone Schwarz-Bart gave Caribbean literature one of its foundational works, The Bridge of Beyond (Pluie et vent sur Télumée Miracle, 1972), a portrait of a lineage of Black women in Guadeloupe whose stories weave together Creole and French. She had previously co-written A Woman Named Solitude (Un plat de porc aux bananes vertes, 1967) with her husband, André Schwarz-Bart, before publishing the novel Ti Jean L’Horizon (1979) and the play Ton beau capitaine (
