Founded in Mogadishu in 1990 by Elman Ali Ahmed, a peace activist assassinated in 1996 for his courage in disarming militias. His daughters continued his work. Ilwad Elman grew up in Canada and chose to return to Mogadishu in 2010, a city in active conflict, to run the centre. The EPHRC operates the first rehabilitation programme for former child soldiers and armed fighters in Somalia: trauma care, psychological support, skills training, legal assistance.
